This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs,CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12,2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world.I never graduated from college.Truth be told,I never graduated from college. This is the closest Ive ever gotten to a college graduation.Today I want to tell you three stories from my life.Thats it.No big deal.Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born.My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates,so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months,I couldnt see the value in it.I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK.It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didnt interest me,and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasnt all romantic.I didnt have a dorm room,so I slept on the floor in friends rooms,I returned coke bottles for the 5 cent; deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple.I loved it.And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on.Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country.Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.Because I had dropped out and didnt have to take the normal classes,I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this.I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science cant capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer,it all came back to me.And we designed it all into the Mac.It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac,its likely that no personal computer would have them.If I had never dropped out,I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you cant connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life.Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20.We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30.And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well,as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me,and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did,our Board of Directors sided with him.So at 30 I was out.And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didnt know what to do for a few months.I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me.I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly.I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did.The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit.I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didnt see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years,I started a company named NeXT,another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife.Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film,Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events,Apple bought NeXT,I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apples current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

Im pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadnt been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it.

Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick.Dont lose faith.Im convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.Youve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.If you havent found it yet, keep looking.Dont settle. As with all matters of the heart, youll know when you find it.And,like any great relationship,it just gets better and better as the years roll on.So keep looking until you find it.Dont settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17,I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday youll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me,and since then, for the past 33 years,I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row,I know I need to change something.

Remembering that Ill be dead soon is the most important tool Ive ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer.I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas.I didnt even know what a pancreas was.The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctors code for prepare to die.It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought youd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day.Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck anendoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor.I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery.I had the surgery and Im fine now.

This was the closest Ive been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades.Having lived through it,I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die.Even people who want to go to heaven dont want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it.And that is as it should be,because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life.It is Lifes change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.Right now the new is you,but someday not too long from now,you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited,so dont waste it living someone elses life.Dont be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other peoples thinking.Dont let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960s,before personal computers and desktop publishing,so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form,35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s,and I was your age.On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous.Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off.Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now,as you graduate to begin anew,I wish that for you.

  Stay Hungry.Stay Foolish.

  Thank you all very much

  Dear teachers,dear classmates:

  Good afternoon,everyone!

It is a great honor to be here today to speak on behalf of the graduates.Actually,at the very beginning,I was told to do this speech.I would like to decline it.Why? Just like yesterdays comic dialogue,my schoolmate damaged me: "do you still have a senior student,do you learn well or grow well?" Im really sorry, its just as good as the two.As is known to all,my great national affairs are full of men and women who have high points and good looks,so I must be embarrassed to represent the style of state affairs. But I want to say,"Gou Lis life and death will be a blessing in mind." So finally resolutely accepted this glorious and arduous task.

  One,recollection

I believe that for all of you here, these four years are the most important words in our life before.

The friendship accumulated over the past four years is our greatest asset. We accompany each other, learn together and grow together.Together with the course guidance, when choosing courses to check each other, resolutely avoid "river lake, lake and sea, flowers and grass, two phoenix one treasure",at noon do not eat also must choose a good class,"but and".We brush early forging, forging and forging, and go to gym class on the empty stomach at eight oclock in the morning, but many people still have "double harvest" of knowledge and weight. We ate three Bay and Wujiaochang together, but we found that Kang was the true love, played all the way to the University and the peoples road, but found the night talk in the bedroom was the best entertainment.

Four years of University, three schoolmates,we laugh together, cry together. When the class was just formed,we played happily together in class activities. When we were just in professional class,we struggled together in the classics. When we are sick, our roommates warm greetings and care give us strength. When we are brokenhearted, our friends are patiently listening and comforting to bring us sunshine.Later,we thought about the way out for graduation and worked together to experience the "nine night nine" life. Not long ago,we were together in the mire of our graduation thesis. When we met,we comforted each other and said,"have you finished your graduation thesis?" Then he smiled meaningfully and said,"I feel relieved."

Sometimes we are lazy,we may procrastinate, but we also have high spirited enthusiasm and aspirant. Many students have made excellent academic achievements, participated in academic topics, participated in academic conferences,as well as various competitions related to the major, and gained a lot of awards and honors.Students associations and associations often appear in our class. In the sophomore year, more than a dozen ministers of our class accounted for 1/4 of our class, the first group of students Association, and the five members of the campus. Our class accounted for two.We are the presidents of various student associations and journalists and editors of school journals. We do not relax professional learning, but the state of the state is the pursuit of comprehensive development,is to pay attention to the cultivation of leadership and influence, from their leadership in a community,a department,we see the future, they lead a unit,an enterprise, and even lead the countrys hope.

  Two.Gratitude

Every aspect of our growth and progress is inseparable from the environment and opportunities provided by the State College, and we can not do without the guidance and assistance provided by our teachers.

Now we have to say goodbye to all this. The memories of the past really go through our minds like trains, and we will think of a lot of people and things to be thankful for.First of all,we would like to thank the instructor,Mr.Zhu Jia.When it was military training,Mr.Zhu,with a small national treasure, accompanied us with Yan Yanlie, and soaked our clothes with sweat, but the tears were soaked in our eyes.Thank you,Mr.Zhu.Thank you for your company and support. When you were sick with your students, you first appeared in the hospital. You took care of our time and left our little national treasure in the evening to join our branch activities. We feel sorry for the little national treasure because we have too much.It is you who use all resources to help us to sponsor,do a good job in graduation activities, and let us leave campus with full memories.Because of you,we have no regrets.Thank you,Mr.Zhu!

And miss Zhang Ji,who accompanied us all on holiday.Mr.Zhang has led us to a good foundation for our class work. These years have also been concerned with our study and life, and have provided us with a lot of guidance in the field of professional and language learning. We will remember the phrase "elite consciousness and public feelings".Thank you,Mr.Zhang!

The reason why we can make progress in knowledge and learning can not be separated from the professional teachers who teach us carefully, and you have led these ignorant young people into the palace of knowledge. In addition to giving us lessons in class, teachers can also open up their academic subjects,so that students can have more opportunities to learn and grow.At the time of our own social practice and research, teachers are sacrificing their precious holiday time, caring for our project process, and working together with us to overcome the difficulties in the research process. Many teachers teachings are deeply engraved in our hearts, guiding us to be human and learn.Thank you, teachers. We wont let you down.

We also want to thank all the teachers of the college Party committee, the general Party branch, the academic system and the educational department. They are all behind the scenes heroes. They give us a little bit of effort to facilitate our study and life.Thank you!

  Three.

Many years later, you may have forgotten that the roommate had eaten your snack, forgot who snored in the class, and forgot the deadline to miss the assignment, but we wont forget the friendship here, teacher wont forget, the sweat, tears, and laughter here,we wont forget!

Graduation is a farewell to the injury and open, everyone is about to be different, but in the face of the unknown,we will not be afraid, because we are state affairs, here are our common home, the young dream has been rooted and sprouted here, each other company,we have all grown up!

We must work hard in the future, and hope that everyone will work hard and lead a positive and brilliant life.

  Thank you all.

david brooks writes today that there are large class differences in parenting styles.these different parent styles may explain the continued success of the upper class.hey, this fits in very well into the parenting theme week at 11d.thanks,davey.(and thanks, jeremy, for the early morning e-mail.)

david picks up on the work of annette lareau who finds that although working class children are more innocent and enjoy more freedom, they havent been prepared for economic success as well as upper class kids.(i have copied the whole article below the flap.take that, times select)

the funny thing about academics is that although they are highly educated, they are poorly paid.they are socio-economic anomalies.they either reside as the poor shlubs in wealthy neighborhoods or as the weirdoes in working class towns.we’ve been the class outsiders for my whole life, and i’ve had the chance to observe both life styles closely.

there are huge differences between the parenting styles between the upper and working class families.poor families respond less quickly to learning problems and are less aggressive with the school bureaucracy.they are less likely to verbally interact with their kids.they are less involved in homework activities.middle and upper class parents are more likely to reward independent thinking.all those factors will definitely impact on their kids’ futures.

but i hope that brooks and his pet academic aren’t insinuating that parenting styles alone impact on a child’s economic success.way too many other factors there.poor families are also likely to live in towns with poorer schools.peers will be more troubled.the poor families will be coping with a variety of problems that make it hard to be good parents – financial stress, drug and alcohol problems, lack of health care, depression.and really smart kids can in many instances over come all that and succeed, though even the smart ones still face obstacles.i would love to know if the researchers controlled for all that.

these parenting differences also don’t negate our obligation to helping these groups reach their potential.

that said,i’m sure that parenting styles are one factor among many that determine a child’s socio-economic future.my kid is already on such a different path from some of his buddies from school.at six years old, their futures are already written on their faces.

what i would like to do is to take the best parts of both parenting practices.somehow combine the respect for adults, the freedom, and the innocence of working class homes with the value for education, the aggressive independence, and confidence of the upper class.it’s a tricky line to navigate, but that’s what i’m going for.

  Dear leaders,teachers,dear students,Good morning,everyone!

I am Ma Haidong of the 2 class of martial arts science. It is a great honor to stand here, representing the 2011 graduates of the Institute of animal science and technology,to say goodbye to our alma mater,to teach our teachers tirelessly,to say goodbye to the classmates at sunset, and to say goodbye to this unforgettable time.First of all,let me,on behalf of all the graduates, express our heartfelt thanks and respect to all the leaders and teachers who have worked hard.

Four years, more than 1400 days and nights,it sounds so long, and when we face today,we feel that it is so short. Some people say that time is a book that is too hasty. Now when it hastily passes, these more than 1400 nights carry too many memories.I cant forget the freshness and confusion when I entered the school.I cant forget the figure of my learning building in the teaching building.I cant forget the laughter and laughter of your bedroom, and I cant forget you and me on the sports field. The scene of the scene is like a gorgeous clippings,a movie that is coming to the curtain, playing our happiness and sadness, recording our youth and past, and witnessing our profound feelings.Believe that the university days of acid, sweet, bitter, spicy to everyone left a precious memory; four years of learning to believe that the university will become an inexhaustible driving force for each of our future development; believe in sincerity, simplicity, courage and perseverance will be the wealth of our life.

Four years ago,we dreamed of dreams and hoped to meet the farmers.Four years later,we will go to everywhere to cherish our love for our alma mater and create our own brand new tomorrow. In the four years of western agriculture,we have experienced the age of the first year of innocence. We have gone through the light dance and flying of the sophomore. We witnessed the rapid development of alma mater and college, and also witnessed the continuous growth of ourselves. We learned to analyze and think,to learn to cooperate and to compete,to learn to inherit and to innovate, and to further learn how to surpass and break through their own limits. Now we are graduating. All these warm memories will be engraved on our hearts. It is the most memorable day of our lives.

Today is a happy day,an exciting day,and a thankful day.On this day,we finally put on the sacred bachelors clothing, and successfully ended our four years of college life. After this day,our university life will draw a full end.We will say goodbye to the students who get along with each other, say goodbye to the teacher, bid farewell to the beautiful picturesque campus, and step on a new journey. But we will never abandon the drip in the West Farm, never forget the teachers advice in the confusion and hesitation, never forget the sincere greetings of the students when they are sad and sad, because there are our most brilliant youth, because this beautiful youth is integrated into the selfless love and students of the teachers.Sincere feelings.

In the face of alma mater,I would like to say thank you, thank you for alma mater to provide us with learning environment, and build a solid platform for our growth and success.

Facing the college,I want to say thank you and thank the leadership of the college. The teachers care and education for us over the past four years is your hard work.Lets make constant efforts in the family of kinetic Sciences, which is a united and vigorous family.

Facing the teacher,I want to say thank you, thank you for the hard work of sweat, unselfish dedication, countless days and nights of ploughing, giving us a sober mind,a pair of eyes and a hearty soul, which is the truth that you have given us professional knowledge and taught us to be a man.

In the face of my classmates,I want to say thank you, thank you for your mutual care and support in the past four years.I think you will always cherish this feeling just like me.On the occasion of the parting,I would like to speak to the alma mater and the college on behalf of the graduates. We will not forget that we are a proud West farmer, and will not forget that he is a proud moving person.Students are about to travel. Please allow me to represent all 20** graduates.

I wish our leaders and teachers good health and good work.

I wish our fathers and mothers eternal youth and good luck.

I wish our Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University and our animal science and Technology Institute every success.

I wish our 20xx Annual graduates a bright future!

  Thank you.

Good morning, dear faculty members, distinguished guests, families, friends and most importantly, today’s graduates.Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak to you here on behalf of the graduates. This is a memorable day both in our personal lives and in the life of this school.

Four years ago,we entered Sanjing university. Some of us may have doubted that if we had made the right decision, but now, because of the friends we made ,because of the sadness and happiness we shared, because of the teachers who gave us guidance, because of all the time in Sanjiang we spent and all activities we participated in,we could not tear ourselves away from the dear campus. It’s difficult to contemplate that perhaps some of us may never see each other again. But we have so rich memeries and experiences that we will never foget each other.

Today we enter the real world to face the challenge .With the knowledge and friends we gained from our university, with the endurance, perseverance, industry we possess, every obstacle that we may encounter in our lives will be overcome.I believe that everyone will make every effort to strive for our life. And remember,an ideal job is not found lying in the street; it takes time and effort to find. But in the end,it will be there for you.So don’t settle for second best and keep looking.

Importantly,We are here today to give our thanks to the unconditional support of each of you, your words of encouragement in good times and your words of consolation in difficult moments. We thank you for your enormous patience with us,for always giving a little more than we asked for and for instilling in us the values and principles that govern our lives now and helping us to become the people we are.The degree that we will receive today also belongs to you.

Last,I would like to congratulate each of you for having reached this goal.We did it,and now we are ready to graduate!

Dean Ellis, honored guests, faculty, family, friends, and the Class of 2015,I cannot begin to express my gratitude for your generosity today.Thank you so much forinviting me to join you in celebrating your graduation! Three years ago,I could never havecomprehended such an opportunity.Thank you, thank you, thank you.

About three years ago today,I was right where you are.I was sitting in a folding chair, justlike that one,and I was wearing my cap and gown, waiting to walk on stage. But I wasntgraduating. When they shook my hand and took my picture, they handed me an empty folder. You see at Stanford, they let you "walk" through graduation even if you havent actually finishedthe requirements necessary to get your diploma. You get to pretend that you are graduatingjust like everyone else, even though you arent. The University had created this program forstudents who were using the summer term to finish up their degrees.I was using it because Iwas embarrassed, and I didnt want to be left out of the celebrations. What was I going to do?Stay in my dorm room while all of my friends processed into the stadium and tossed their capsinto the air without me? So I sat in the hot sun and I listened to Cory Booker talk for what feltlike quite a while, and I waved to my family who had traveled all the way to Stanford to watchme not to graduate.By the way,hi,Mom!

It only recently occurred to me,while preparing this address, how totally absurd this wholecharade was.It reminded me that oftentimes we do all sorts of silly things to avoid appearingdifferent.Conforming happens so naturally that we can forget how powerful it is – we want tobe accepted by our peers – we want to be a part of the group. Its in our biology. But the thingsthat make us human are those times we listen to the whispers of our soul and allow ourselves tobe pulled in another direction.Conformity is so fascinating and so pervasive that it has beenstudied for a very long time.See,it turns out there are two things that can dramatically reduceconformity in a group setting. The first is a single dissenting voice, and the second is theability to communicate privately with other members of the group. Our government gives usthe right to privacy and the right to express ourselves freely in the hope that we mightmitigate conformity.Democracy wasnt designed to promote popular thought. It wasarchitected to protect dissent. For,as President Kennedy said,"Conformity is the jailer offreedom and the enemy of growth."

I recently fell in love with a story about a great piece of American art.And its about a guynamed Bob Rauschenberg. He was a young artist, and he went to go visit his idol. You know, hereally loved this guy and he was totally terrified. He was so nervous that he was clutching abottle of Jack Daniels for liquid courage. And the truth is: he actually wasnt just visiting.Hewas visiting Bill de Kooning to ask for something. He wanted one of Bill de Koonings drawings. You see,Bill de Kooning,he was a dumb guy,he knew exactly what Rauschenberg was up to,because Rauschenberg had recently been experimenting with his own art.He had been creatingthese drawings and then erasing them. But that wasnt enough for Bob Rauschenberg, becauseBob Rauschenberg didnt want to just erase his own art,he wanted to erase the art of hishero. So de Kooning obliged but he took his time, and he tortured the young artist as hewandered around his studio in search of the perfect drawing. He didnt want to just give him arandom drawing. He wanted it to be something really great, something that he really loved. And he finally settled on a drawing that was very, very hard to erase. It was comprised oflayers of lead and charcoal. And he generously gave it to Bob Rauschenberg.According to Bob,it took nearly two months to erase the drawing. But it was Jasper Johns who came along andframed it and he gave that drawing a title, called "Erased de Kooning by Bob Rauschenberg." Itwas Jasper Johns who recognized that in the process of erasing de Koonings work,BobRauschenberg had actually created something new,his own new work of art.

we miss you─teachers who are tireless in teaching; we will keep your gestures and your white hairs in our hearts deeply; we will miss the quietness with the lights at night in the classroom; we will miss the race and exercise on the playground; we will miss even the crowds in the dining hall and the quarrel on the beds; we will still miss every green piece and every piece of waste paper flying like flakes in the air ...however,today we will leave nothing but the first rose with our alma mater and our teachers which is entrusted with our love and respect.

4 years seems very long but 4 years seems very short.from now on,we all will go into the society.the society is broad and wide for us.we will shoulder heavy responsibilities; we will work diligently; and we will expect to be informed of good news from one another.now,i beg you all to cherish the occasion; to remember the names, the status, appearance and the character of the person around you.now let’s be hand in hand together; let’s present the rose to each other.may the rose carry our appreciation and blessing! we are very closely linked no matter what the world may be.may the fresh rose in our hands keep its fragrants!

  thank you all again!

Good afternoon. My remarks at this moment in our Commencement rituals are officially titled a “Report to the Alumni.” The first time I delivered them,in 2008,I was the only obstacle between all of you and J.K.Rowling.I looked out on a sea of eager children, costumed Dumbledores, and Quidditch brooms waving impatiently in the air.Today, you await Mark Zuckerberg, whose wizardry takes a different form, one that has changed the world, and although he doesn’t seem to have inspired an outbreak of hoodies,we certainly do have some costumes in this audience today.I see we are now handing out blankets.

This is a day of joy and celebration,of happy endings and new beginnings,of families and friends,of achievements and hopes. It is also a day when we as a university perform our most important annual ritual, affirming once again the purposes that animate us and the values that direct and inspire us.

I want to speak today about one of the most important and in recent months, most contested – of these values. It is one that has provoked debate, dissent, confrontation, and even violence on campuses across the country, and one that has attracted widespread public attention and criticism.

I am,of course, talking about issues of free speech on university campuses. The meaning and limits of free speech are questions deeply embedded in our legal system,in interpretations of the First Amendment and its applications.I am no constitutional lawyer, indeed no lawyer at all,and I do not intend in my brief remarks today to address complex legal doctrines.Nor,clearly, can I in a few brief minutes take on even a fraction of the arguments that have been advanced on this issue.Instead,I speak as one who has been a university president for a decade in order to raise three questions:

First: Why is free speech so important to and at universities?

Second: Why does it seem under special challenge right now?

And,third: How might we better address these challenges by moving beyond just defensively protecting free speech – which,of course,we must do – to actively and affirmatively enabling it and nurturing environments in which it can thrive?

So first: Why is free speech so important to and at universities? This is a question I took up with the newly arrived first-year students in the College when I welcomed them at Convocation last fall. For centuries,I told them, universities have been environments in which knowledge has been discovered, collected, studied, debated, expanded, changed, and advanced through the power of rational argument and exchange. We pursue truth unrelentingly, but we must never be so complacent as to believe we have unerringly attained it.Veritas is inspiration and aspiration. We assume there is always more to know and discover so we open ourselves to challenge and change. We must always be ready to be wrong,so being part of a university community requires courage and humility.Universities must be places open to the kind of debate that can change ideas and committed to standards of reason and evidence that form the bases for evaluating them.

Silencing ideas or basking in intellectual orthodoxy independent of facts and evidence impedes our access to new and better ideas, and it inhibits a full and considered rejection of bad ones. From at least the time of Galileo,we can see how repressing seemingly heretical ideas has blinded societies and nations to the enhanced knowledge and understanding on which progress depend.Far more recently,we can see here at Harvard how our inattentiveness to the power and appeal of conservative voices left much of our community astonished – blindsided by the outcome of last fall’s election. We must work to ensure that universities do not become bubbles isolated from the concerns and discourse of the society that surrounds them.

Universities must model a commitment to the notion that truth cannot simply be claimed, but must be established – established through reasoned argument, assessment, and even sometimes uncomfortable challenges that provide the foundation for truth. The legitimacy of universities’ claim to be sources and validators of fact depends on our willingness to actively and vigorously defend those facts. And we must remember that limiting some speech opens the dangerous possibility that the speech that is ultimately censored may be our own.If some words are to be treated as equivalent to physical violence and silenced or even prosecuted, who is to decide which words? Freedom of expression,as Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes famously said long ago, protects not only free thought for those who agree with us but freedom for the thought we hate.We need to hear those hateful ideas so our society is fully equipped to oppose and defeat them.

Over the years, differences about the implementation of the University’s free speech principles have often provoked controversy. And we haven’t always gotten it right. As long ago as 1939,an invitation from a student group to the head of the American Communist Party generated protest and the invitation was ultimately canceled by the Corporation.Bertrand Russell’s appointment as William James Lecturer just a year later divided the Corporation, but President Conant broke the tie and Russell came.Campus conflicts over invited speakers are hardly new.

Yet the vehemence with which these issues have been debated in recent months, not just on campuses but in the broader public sphere, suggests there is something distinctive about this moment.Certainly, these controversies reflect a highly polarized political and social environment – perhaps the most divisive since the era of the Civil War.And in these already fractious circumstances, free speech debates have provided a fertile substrate into which anger and disagreement could be planted to nourish partisan outrage and generate media clickbait. But that is only a partial explanation.

Universities themselves have changed dramatically in recent years, reaching beyond their traditional, largely homogeneous populations to become more diverse than perhaps any other institution in which Americans find themselves living together.Once overwhelmingly white, male,Protestant, and upper class,Harvard College is now half female, majority minority, religiously pluralistic, with nearly 60 percent of students able to attend because of financial aid.Fifteen percent are the first in their families to go to college. Many of our students struggle to feel full members of this community – a community in which people like them have so recently arrived. They seek evidence and assurance that – to borrow the title of a powerful theatrical piece created by a group of our African-American students – evidence and assurance that they, too, are Harvard.

The price of our commitment to freedom of speech is paid disproportionately by these students. For them, free speech has not infrequently included enduring a questioning of their abilities, their humanity, their morality – their very legitimacy here. Our values and our theory of education rest on the assumption that members of our community will take the risk of speaking and will actively compete in our wild rumpus of argument and ideas. It requires them as well to be fearless in face of argument or challenge or even verbal insult. And it expects that fearlessness even when the challenge is directed to the very identity – race, religion, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, nationality – that may have made them uncertain about their right to be here in the first place.Demonstrating such fearlessness is hard; no one should be mocked as a snowflake for finding it so.

Hard, but important and attainable.Attainable,we believe, for every member of our community. But the price of free speech cannot be charged just to those most likely to become its target. We must support and empower the voices of all the members of our community and nurture the courage and humility that our commitment to unfettered debate demands from all of us.And that courage means not only resilience in face of challenge or attack, but strength to speak out against injustices directed at others as well.

Free speech doesn’t just happen and require intervention when it is impeded. It is not about the freedom to out-shout others while everyone has their fingers in their ears. For free speech to flourish,we must build an environment where everyone takes responsibility for the right not just to speak, but to hear and be heard, where everyone assumes the responsibility to treat others with dignity and respect. It requires not just speakers, but,in the words of James Ryan, dean of our Graduate School of Education, generous listeners.Amidst the current soul-searching about free speech,we need to devote more attention to establishing the conditions in which everyone’s speech is encouraged and taken seriously.

Ensuring freedom of speech is not just about allowing speech. It is about actively creating a community where everyone can contribute and flourish,a community where argument is relished, not feared.Freedom of speech is not just freedom from censorship; it is freedom to actively join the debate as a full participant. It is about creating a context in which genuine debate can happen.

Talk a lot,I urged the Class of 2020 last fall; listen more.Don’t stand safely on the sidelines; take the risk of being wrong. It is the best way to learn and grow. And build a culture of generous listening so that others may be emboldened to take risks, too.A community in a shared search for Veritas – that is the ideal for which Harvard must strive. We need it now more than ever.

  Thank you.

the cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation.but again,

the cynics are wrong.we care deeply for each other,we cherish freedom,we treasure justice, and we seek truth.last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.

as college students,we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives.we all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future,or even the future of our country.i believe in all my fellow classmates.though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish.i believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities.we are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place.i believe in our future.

Thank you,Katie – and thank you to President Faust, the Fellows of Harvard College, the Boardof Overseers, and all the faculty, alumni, and students who have welcomed me back to campus.

I’m excited to be here, not only to address the distinguished graduates and alumni atHarvard University’s 363rd commencement but to stand in the exact spot where Oprah stoodlast year.OMG.

Let me begin with the most important order of business: Let’s have a big round of applause forthe Class of 2014! They’ve earned it!

As excited as the graduates are, they are probably even more exhausted after the past fewweeks. And parents: I’m not referring to their final exams.I’m talking about the SeniorOlympics, the Last Chance Dance, and the Booze Cruise – I mean, the moonlight cruise.

The entire year has been exciting on campus: Harvard beat Yale for the seventh straight timein football. The men’s basketball team went to the second round of the NCAA tournament forthe second straight year. And the Men’s Squash team won national championship.

Who’d a thunk it: Harvard,an athletic powerhouse! Pretty soon they’ll be asking whether youhave academics to go along with your athletic programs.

My personal connection to Harvard began in 1964,when I graduated from Johns HopkinsUniversity in Baltimore and matriculated here at the B-School.

You’re probably asking: How did I ever get into Harvard Business School, given my stellaracademic record, where I always made the top half of the class possible? I have no idea.Andthe only people more surprised than me were my professors.

Anyway, here I am again back in Cambridge. And I have noticed that a few things havechanged since I was a student here.Elsie’s – a sandwich spot I used to love near the Square is now a burrito shop. The Wursthaus – which had great beer and sausage – is now an artisanalgastro-pub,whatever the heck that is.And the old Holyoke Center is now named the SmithCampus Center.

Don’t you just hate it when alumni put their names all over everything? I was thinking aboutthat this morning as I walked into the Bloomberg Center on the Harvard Business Schoolcampus across the river.

But the good news is,Harvard remains what it was when I first arrived on campus 50 yearsago: America’s most prestigious university. And,like other great universities,it lies at theheart of the American experiment in democracy.

Their purpose is not only to advance knowledge, but to advance the ideals of our nation.Greatuniversities are places where people of all backgrounds, holding all beliefs, pursuing allquestions, can come to study and debate their ideas – freely and openly.

Today,I’d like to talk with you about how important it is for that freedom to exist for everyone,no matter how strongly we may disagree with another’s viewpoint.

Tolerance for other people’s ideas, and the freedom to express your own,are inseparable valuesat great universities.Joined together, they form a sacred trust that holds the basis of ourdemocratic society.

But that trust is perpetually vulnerable to the tyrannical tendencies of monarchs, mobs, andmajorities. And lately,we have seen those tendencies manifest themselves too often, both oncollege campuses and in our society.

That’s the bad news and unfortunately,I think both Harvard, and my own city of New York, have been witnesses to this trend.
