　　i taught ms. x in two of the courses that i have offered, the finance law of china and the international finance law, and had therefore many opportunities to observe her performance in her undergraduate years. a diligent student, she scored an average grade of over 80 on the 100-point scale, excelling most of her fellow students in her studies. in a strict grading system like ours, this represented a remarkable achievement.

　　independent and intelligent, ms. x exhibited exquisite analytical and organizational skills in both her coursework and beyond. with a powerful aptitude for languages, she is articulate in both english and chinese. although her english had much to be desired when she first entered into the university, she quickly improved it as she moved into upper years. her english proficiency became so good in her third year that she won the rare opportunity, as one of the department’s ten chosen students, to take the course “american administrative law”, which was taught only in english by a visiting professor from the xxxx university law school. she passed the exam in that challenging course easily and achieved a grade of over 90, once again proving her intellectual caliber as a top student.

　　I am pleased to write this letter for my former student Miss Nan Li, who graduated from this College with an L.B. degree in June 1978.

　　Miss Li was admitted to the Department of Law of this College in 1974 through highly competitive

　　entrance examination which is conducted annually and is open to the whole nation. Even in such a selective group. Miss Li made herself distinguished. As professor and dean of the College, I have access to her records of academic work and moral conduct, In her fourth year study, I instructed her in Anglo-American Laws on Trespass. So I have known her quite well.

　　Miss Li's performance, like that in many other courses she taken, was excellent with a superior grade of 86 for the first semester, and 84 for the second semester. In our university and in other university here, 80 is considered "A" , the highest level.

　　As far as I know, Miss Li wishes to continue her study in Law for an advanced degree. I am sure she has had sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the subject and certainly has the ability to undertake the study.

　　推薦信的準備過程，因人而異。運氣好的人，只要準備好自己的修課成績、讀書計劃、以及申請學校所提供之推薦信表格及信封(或自己準備及繕打好的信封)等相關資料交給推薦者即可。推薦者在看完你的資料後，就幫你撰寫一封完整的推薦信，并彌封簽好名之後，通知你去領取。如果推薦人對你有深刻的了解，并能具體地描述出你的優(yōu)點與特質(zhì)，又有不錯的英文寫作能力，相信這會是一封具有影響力的推薦信。

　　以上所述當然是一種最理想的情況。但是，為數(shù)不少的申請者則至少必須撰寫一封以上的推薦信草稿，提供給推薦人作為參考之用。此時，申請者就要耗費一番心思去擬稿。推薦信之內(nèi)容通常不太需要像寫讀書計劃時那般地雕琢字句，并且要求嚴謹?shù)慕Y構。一般而言，推薦信內(nèi)容有其一定的寫作方向及格式。第一段通常必須說明推薦者與你的關系;第二段以後則是主文部分，被推薦人的學術成就、工作經(jīng)驗、個人特色或優(yōu)異表現(xiàn)……等，皆是可加以發(fā)揮的事項;最後一段則可考慮用簡單扼要的語氣，再次強調(diào)被推薦者優(yōu)秀的特點，并告訴評審委員自己毫不保留地推薦該申請者的態(tài)度等諸如此類的結尾辭，就算完成了一封推薦信草稿。

　　以我而言，在最後幾所申請學校時，由於時間比較緊湊，因此我采取「三分之二」的策略。什么是三分之二呢?大部分的學校要求的推薦信是三封，我選擇只在草擬工作上司與教授這兩封推薦信時，多花些心思於描述具體的事例。例如，在工作上完成什么樣的重大計劃或是曾經(jīng)協(xié)助某位教授的研究計劃;另外一封則以描述個人特質(zhì)及個性上的特色為主，不再特別找具體事跡時。前兩封推薦信所要注意所舉的事例不要寫的太過於一般性，以免顯現(xiàn)不出你在研究上的具備的能力與發(fā)展?jié)摿�。第三封就不需太過於注意與前兩封內(nèi)容之間的搭配關系，可多用一些力度，使用強列的形容詞來描述自己的特性。

　　市面上都會有一些留學書信參考范例的書籍，我是參考這些書籍的第一段及最後一段內(nèi)容來寫推薦信草稿，中間的這部分的寫作方式與內(nèi)容，則與讀書計劃相似。我的推薦人當中，其中一位是教過我的教授。他要求看我的成績單、申請學校的名冊、推薦信的草稿、信封及讀書計劃。這些資料在當時我都已準備妥當，由於我以前在修他的課及實習的.成績都很高，教授對我的印象還不錯。不過讓我擔心的是，我的大學的在學總平均成績不是很好，不知是否會影響教授對我的整體印象。另外，他所寫的推薦信是直接在信封封口密封及簽名，不讓任何申請者看信的內(nèi)容，因此不知其所寫的細節(jié)著眼在哪些部分。

　　現(xiàn)在回想起來，建議讀者有機會應該多與學校教授或其他推薦人溝通信件之內(nèi)容，特別是在所申請學校的課程內(nèi)容與專精領域各有不相同的情況，更是需要與推薦人討論這些學校的課程，讓他清楚地了解這些研究所課程及教授群。這樣一來，教授在寫推薦信的時候，對被推薦人的描述應該會更具體而貼切。說不定學校教授認識與你所申請研究所的教授，甚至與program director有學術合作的經(jīng)驗及交情，對於你的申請可是會有很大的幫助。

　　多與學校教授聯(lián)系還可能會得到一些意想不到的資訊。如果系上有曾經(jīng)留美再回國任教的教授，通常會給你些美國當?shù)卦摽葡祷蛳嚓P產(chǎn)業(yè)發(fā)展的最新狀況，這些都是非常寶貴的資訊。以我為例，系上有位教授其取得碩士學位的學校，與我所申請其中一家學校相同，所以當我在與該教授談過之後，對這所學校的印象十分深刻。後來，這所學校很快給予我入學許可，也很感謝教授在我申請學校時所提供的留學資訊。

　　留學不僅是追求學問，而且是人際關系的拓展。套一句電視廣告語來說：「你不知你何時需要他(她)」。所以在求學時代與師長或是工作的上司建立良好的關系，對未來留學或是畢業(yè)後回國就業(yè)，會有很大的幫助。建議各位在留美期間，要與臺灣的學校教授或以前的工作上司保持聯(lián)系，不要過分專注於課業(yè)而與臺灣方面的訊息脫節(jié)，將來學成歸國之後，也許還需要他們提供一些相關的就業(yè)資訊。祝各位能順利申請到心目中理想的學校!
