Dear Colleagues:
I am Head of the Department of International Finance in the School of
Economics at the Beijing University, perhaps the most prestigious
university in China, and I am writing to recommend Mr. XXXX, one of my favorite students, for acceptance into your Master's program.
I got to know him personally last semester when he was taking the course of Special Topics on International Finance that I was teaching. In the class, he showed great interest in economics. He studied conscientiously and often talked with me after the class about the questions that he had come across in his readings. Once when we talked about the country's ongoing restructuring of its tax system, he delved into the increasing cost of tax evasion. We then discussed several methods of calculating the cost. As we talked, I found that he was very skilled in expressing his ideas through diagrammatic curves and mathematics. Recognizing that the government's attitudes to acts of tax evasion will affect not only people's behavior but also the cost of levying taxes, he saw possible solutions to the problem in the Game Theory. I encouraged him to pursue this idea. He said he didn't know much about the Game Theory and proceeded to borrow some essays by Nash from me. He thus left me with a deep impression.
Studying with conscientiousness, Mr. XXXX often came up with creative ideas. Unlike some other students, he studied not to just pass the exams but to really improve his knowledge and expertise. He stands out among his
fellow classmates with an unmistakable thirst for genuine understanding of the country's economic realities and problems. That has won him appreciation from not just me but my colleagues as well. But he did do well in exams too. In the final exam of last semester, he got a high score of 90 for my course.
He often talks with me about his ideal to become an economist. To help quench his thirst for knowledge, I have lent many of my own books to him and tutored him in his self-study program. He has been much more engrossed in doing independent research than preparing for exams, but his grades still keep him ranked among the top 25% of his class. I think he is a very intelligent young fellow.
Mr. XXXX has a good command of the English language. As he is well acquainted with me, he has often helped me in my own research by translating some English essays that I am too busy to translate. His translations are usually quite good. His oral English is good too.
Compared with other Chinese students who may be applying to your program, I think Mr. XXXX should be considered more favorably.
Well grounded in the theories of economics and the methodologies of economic research, and proficient in English, Mr. XXXX should make an outstanding student in graduate studies. I have not seen many Chinese students who are so intent on achieving an academic career in economics.

適當(dāng)提及自己的“缺點(diǎn)”
一封推薦信如果闡述的完全是被推薦的同學(xué)的優(yōu)點(diǎn)，不免讓人覺得有粉飾之嫌，如果能恰當(dāng)?shù)丶尤胍恍?ldquo;缺點(diǎn)”，不僅能令推薦信真實(shí)，還會(huì)通過“似貶實(shí)褒”，反而突出了被推薦人的特殊氣質(zhì)。例如計(jì)算機(jī)專業(yè)、數(shù)學(xué)專業(yè)乃至金融專業(yè)的同學(xué)，在推薦信中可以考慮加入這樣的詞句：“該生有時(shí)因?yàn)檫^分專注于研究工作而難以平衡生活各方面的關(guān)系，這不失為一種美中不足”。這句話似乎是在談“缺點(diǎn)”，但很明顯這樣的“缺點(diǎn)”其實(shí)正是很多專業(yè)最渴望的“缺點(diǎn)”——廢寢忘食的工作態(tài)度，從而使得“缺點(diǎn)”也為申請(qǐng)?zhí)峁┝司薮髱椭?/p>
推薦信里的缺點(diǎn)不要針對(duì)自己的專業(yè) 可以考慮針對(duì)你的專業(yè), 不注重的地方, 寫一些缺點(diǎn)。比如你以后是要做研究的, 你就不能說自己沒耐心, 不注意細(xì)節(jié)，或者以后你是要跟人打交道多的, 你就不能說自己不善于和人相處, 交流等等。推薦信里的缺點(diǎn)不要影響你所學(xué)專業(yè)，但是要看起來要真實(shí)一點(diǎn), 而且不能跟你其他部分寫的有矛盾。
在推薦信中不要用盡所有表現(xiàn)人類美德、才華和優(yōu)秀的形容詞，卻沒有一個(gè)具體例證。在推薦信中適當(dāng)提及缺點(diǎn)是非常有必要的，但是這個(gè)缺點(diǎn)最好不要針對(duì)自己所學(xué)的專業(yè)。
美國(guó)的商學(xué)院一般都要求申請(qǐng)者有2～3封，被認(rèn)為是學(xué)校從多方面了解申請(qǐng)者的最有力的證明材料。一般來說，推薦信雖然不會(huì)產(chǎn)生十分神奇的作用，但對(duì)那些處于錄與不錄邊緣的申請(qǐng)，卻常有意想不到的效果。那么選擇什么樣的人寫推薦信最合適呢?以下有三條原則可供參考：
一、 美國(guó)商學(xué)院最青睞的是那些與申請(qǐng)者有過密切關(guān)系，熟悉其領(lǐng)導(dǎo)能力、組織能力或?qū)W術(shù)水平的人寫的。推薦人必須站在客觀的立場(chǎng)上評(píng)價(jià)你，千萬不要選一個(gè)很有名卻對(duì)你并不了解的人，因?yàn)樯虒W(xué)院希望推薦人能提供具體細(xì)節(jié)。
二、 選擇真正欣賞你的人，只有這樣的人才會(huì)愿意花時(shí)間和精力為你寫出一封好信。如果寫得潦草倉(cāng)促或是充滿了敷衍套話，將使錄取委員會(huì)對(duì)你的印象大打折扣。
三、 選擇能夠說明你的關(guān)鍵品質(zhì)和獨(dú)特個(gè)性的`人。他最好能就你的管理才能、智力水平、為人處事等某一方面做深入闡述，寫出一封充滿申請(qǐng)者獨(dú)特個(gè)性的推薦信。
找八桿子打不著的人，反而讓人覺得你不可信。一般找自己的導(dǎo)師，系主任，熟悉你的教授、公司領(lǐng)導(dǎo)比較有效。當(dāng)然，如果有一位公司直接主管、國(guó)際有名的教授能充任你的推薦人，你申請(qǐng)學(xué)校系科的主管教授又是這位知名教授的學(xué)生，或朋友，那這樣的推薦信無疑十分有力。
你應(yīng)該在計(jì)劃遞交申請(qǐng)材料的期限前三個(gè)月左右開始尋找推薦人。選好推薦人后，接下來要做的就是和他(她)坦誠(chéng)地面談一次，向他(她)解釋清楚你需要什么樣的幫助。告訴他(她)你想申請(qǐng)哪些學(xué)校，為什么選擇那些學(xué)校。最好能向推薦人提供一份你的完整詳細(xì)的簡(jiǎn)歷，以方便寫推薦信。如果你認(rèn)為推薦者應(yīng)就某幾個(gè)方面作一下重點(diǎn)描述，應(yīng)該提前準(zhǔn)備一份書面材料，列舉那些你認(rèn)為你的推薦人可以著手的地方。
不僅要在評(píng)價(jià)方面有特色，更重要的是要有具體的事例作為佐證。許多申請(qǐng)者的推薦信都會(huì)犯一種致命錯(cuò)誤，那就是其中都充滿了"excellent"，"distinguished"， "ambitious"，"natural born leader"這樣的頂級(jí)贊美之詞，卻沒有具體的例子來支持這些"論點(diǎn)"。這樣不僅不能使商學(xué)院增加對(duì)申請(qǐng)者的了解，反而會(huì)讓他們覺得無法對(duì)申請(qǐng)者有一個(gè)真實(shí)的認(rèn)識(shí)。申請(qǐng)者在和寫信的人溝通時(shí)，尤其要注意這點(diǎn)。
一般說來，商學(xué)院寄來的申請(qǐng)材料中都附有表格。推薦人可按照表格逐項(xiàng)填寫，如果遇到難以評(píng)價(jià)的項(xiàng)目可以寫I don’t know或unable to judge。如果沒有既定的表格，推薦人可以自行按書信格式寫。
