概念
hotel management和hospitality management。基本相同，但具體方向略有區(qū)別。hospitality更廣義些，統(tǒng)指旅游接待業(yè)，其中包括hotel，travel agency，airline，casino等等，甚至一個(gè)快餐店，咖啡吧也可以叫hospitality。我們習(xí)慣上把所有有關(guān)hotel, tourism, restaurant, travel and hospitality industries 的專業(yè)歸為一類，但從每個(gè)program不同的名稱就可以看出其課程設(shè)置和研究方向的重點(diǎn)。hospitality大體上可以分為旅游休閑方向和酒店方向。我們這里主要討論酒店管理方向。

如何選擇
畢達(dá)教育的老師分析，有酒店管理專業(yè)的學(xué)校這么多，申請酒店管理的時(shí)候如何選擇，就要看你的職業(yè)方向和學(xué)校的專長了。很難擬出一個(gè)確切的排名。只能說，最適合的才是最好的。比如學(xué)術(shù)方面Purdue和PSU無疑非常頂尖，但從就業(yè)的角度考慮，UNLV和Johnson&Wales 是性價(jià)比較高的。另外地處旅游區(qū)或大都市的學(xué)校比較便于實(shí)習(xí)和工作，而做研究則要看學(xué)校里面是不是有豐富的學(xué)術(shù)資源和有名的研究所和教授。申請酒店管理時(shí)還需要仔細(xì)比較每個(gè)學(xué)校的program，是在Business School, Tourism School 還是Human Nutrition Department下面，是MBA還是MS，是擁有一個(gè)獨(dú)立的學(xué)院還是一個(gè)program或者只是一個(gè)concerntration。這些都很重要。后會(huì)具體介紹一些熱門的學(xué)校。
就業(yè)
提到酒店管理，大多數(shù)人想到的是畢業(yè)以后去酒店工作，其實(shí)并不是這么局限。我們來看看Cornell 05年畢業(yè)生都進(jìn)入哪些行業(yè)吧：Hotel/Resort (Property), Consulting, Restaurant Operations, E-Commerce, Travel Distribution, Hotel/Resort (Corporation/Regional), Real Estate Finance, Entrepreneurship, Managed Services, Law, Winery, Banking& Financial Services. 怎么樣，是不是有些聽起來很新鮮。
我個(gè)人認(rèn)為酒店專業(yè)的就業(yè)前景還是不錯(cuò)的，要在美國找到一份工作并不難。薪水方面，一般在酒店內(nèi)部工作的起薪相對不高，但也不能忽視行業(yè)特有的隱形收入。另外除了在酒店的各個(gè)部門工作外，所有與酒店旅游相關(guān)的行業(yè)都需要這方面的人才，傳統(tǒng)高薪水的咨詢，投行，培訓(xùn)，律師事務(wù)所也不理外�；貒脑挋C(jī)會(huì)就更多了。國內(nèi)高素質(zhì)的酒店人才奇缺，而酒店周邊產(chǎn)業(yè)的市場空白預(yù)示著一個(gè)行業(yè)的掘金時(shí)代即將到來。
申請條件
對所有學(xué)校來說，理想的申請者“has string academic ability, relevant work experience, leadership potential, and career drive”。呵呵，當(dāng)然這是學(xué)校的美好理想，與現(xiàn)實(shí)總是有距離的。所以GPA不高，或者沒有相關(guān)學(xué)術(shù)北京，或者工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)少，都不用太擔(dān)心。重要的是，是不是真的很喜歡這個(gè)專業(yè)，是不是很了解它，個(gè)人性格和素質(zhì)適合不適合，以及有沒有清晰的職業(yè)規(guī)劃。如果在對專業(yè)的理性認(rèn)識(shí)還不夠的情況下申請，硬件條件再好，可能錄取的希望也不大。所以建議沒有相關(guān)背景的申請者多做點(diǎn)功課，了解自己，了解專業(yè)。要是學(xué)了兩年才發(fā)現(xiàn)“原來酒店管理不是我想象的那樣啊”，“原來我不適合啊”，“原來做這個(gè)行業(yè)這么辛苦啊”，就有點(diǎn)晚啦。我想這也是學(xué)校要求工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)的原因之一。
工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)
不一定，但是有更好。美國所有酒店管理學(xué)校當(dāng)中，Cornell和UNLV對工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)要求最高。下面的這段話摘自Cornell網(wǎng)站，我覺得是對工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)問題的最好詮釋。
We look for candidates with strong supervisory or managerial skills and leadership potential, and we prefer those with a year or more of full-time hospitality-related work experience. Three years of work experience has been the average for students admitted in the past few years.
Work experience is beneficial for several reasons. It will help you grasp concepts more easily and retain them more fully. And it enhances class discussions. Our classes are small and interactive. Prior work experience enables you to participate more actively.
Work experience demonstrates commitment to the industry. We are the best at what we do, and we are highly specialized.
Work experience demonstrates that you know what you are undertaking. If you have worked for years in finance, information technology, real estate, or some other field and wish to switch to hospitality, that is fine. We will encourage you to build on your previous experience, which can be adapted to an aspect of hospitality. During the application process, we expect you to articulate your commitment to the industry.
Finally, work experience makes you more marketable. It enables you to offer experience combined with an advanced degree, and if you choose a career track that meshes with previous work experience, we can help you position yourself for management-track positions, if that is what you want.
總體來說，學(xué)校不是單純?yōu)榱斯ぷ髂晗薜臄?shù)字而設(shè)立這個(gè)要求。如果你的素質(zhì)，專業(yè)認(rèn)識(shí)，職業(yè)規(guī)劃都已經(jīng)非常professional，那有沒有工作經(jīng)驗(yàn)都不是問題。
