Recently, the news has been filled with reports of the“bird flu.” Asia is on a region-wide health alert, withgovernments slaughtering millions of chickens to contain outbreaks of the birdflu in Thailand, Vietnam,Cambodia,South Korea,Japan and China.

Influenza-commonly called“flu”-is one of theoldest and most common diseases known to man.It canalso be one of the deadliest. The great“Spanish flu” pandemic(傳染病) of 1918-1919 was considered the worst plague in history, killing up to 40 million people with half of the world’s population infected in only a few months.

Influenza can also infect many different warm-blooded animals, such as birds. However, the“flu” virus usually develops different variants that are specialized foreach species of animal that they infect.Cross speciesinfections are rare.

A flu strain called influenza A(H5 N 1) appears to have made asuccessful jump from birds to humans. The viral strain(病毒株) was first isolated from South African birds in 1961.The first known human infection occurred in a Hong Kong child in Mayof 1997.By the end of 1997, there were 13 confirmedcases and four deaths, all in Hong Kong.In an attempt to stop the spread of the disease, the government of Hong Kong ordered the slaughter of all chickens, ducks, geese, anddomestic pigeons.

Human infected with H5N1 so far are thought to have caught the diseasefrom fowl and no person-to-person transmissions have been reported. The World HealthOrganization, however, fears thatthe bird flu is highly adaptable and might leap the species barrier. It says anyone exposed to the disease should be isolated to avoidcontact with sufferers of regular human influenza.

1.The recent outbreak of bird flu resultsin___________.

  A) the death of millions of people B) the slaughter of a lot of chickens

  C) a worldwide panic D) too manyexaggerated news repots

2.The“Spanish flu” was the worst plague in history because__________.

  A) it led to a terrible loss of human life B) it was the earliest kind of flu

  C) it broke out after World War One D) it infected many animals as well

  3.H5N1 is a flu strain __________.

  A) limited to Hong Kong B)which first affected human beings in 1961

  C) crossing species barriers D)which was first isolated from American birds

4.What should be done in order to stop thespread of bird flu?

  A) All infected fowls have to be slaughtered.

  B) The government should isolate all the flu patients.

  C) No fowl should be raised.

  D) Specialized hospitals should be established.

  5.It has been discovered that____________.

  A) H5N1 does not transmit among human beings

  B) bird flu spreads only among birds

  C) H5N1 is a variant of flu virus

  D) bird flu adapts easily to other species

1.B)。 第一段中...with governments slaughtering millions of chickens to containoutbreaks of the bird flu 可充分證明B) 是正確的。

2.A)。 A) 是對原文 killing up to 40 million people with half of the world’s population infected 的概括,是正確的。

  4.A)。根據(jù)原文中提到的香港應(yīng)對 H5NI 的經(jīng)驗(yàn),A) 是正確的:B)錯(cuò)在 all the flu patients上;C)是不現(xiàn)實(shí)的一種方法:D)在原文中并未提到。

  5.C)。 特別注意A),雖然最后一段提到no person-to-person transmissions;have been reported,但由此不一定就能得出 H5N1 does nottransmit among human beings 的結(jié)論。

Harvard Business School said on Tuesday it was rejecting applicationsfrom 119 would-be students accused of hacking into a website to learn early ifthey were accepted before the sending of official notifications.

“This behavior is unethical at best a serious breach of trust thatcannot be countered by rationalization. Any applicantfound to have done so will not be admitted to this school.”Kim Clark, dean of Harvard Business Schoolsaid in a statement.

Harvard said it knew the names of the 119 applicants who tried to learntheir admissions status early using a security flaw in an onlinecollege-recruitment and application product called Apply Yourself.

Jim Aisner, a spokesman for the Ivy League university declined to sayhow many of the 119 would have been accepted at the school had they not peeked.

The intrusions came as business schools across America place moreemphasis on ethics following a wave of Wall Street accounting scandals.

Clark said the school’s mission was to educate principled leaders with highintegrity, sound judgment and“astrong moral compass”一 an intuitive sense of what isright and wrong.

“Those who have hacked into this Web site have failed to pass thattest,”Clark said.

Last week an individual exposed the Apply Yourself security flaw on anonline message board and showed readers how to access records at some of themost prestigious U.S.business schools to see if they wereaccepted.

Apply Yourself said it fixed the flaw after learning about it and thatthe intruders did not get information about anyone but themselves.A company spokesmanwas not immediately available for further comment.

Other schools affected said they were still mulling(仔細(xì)考慮) how to handlethe matter.

The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in Hanover New Hampshire saidit would carry out a full investigation before determining what action to take.

A Tuck spokeswoman would not say how many applicants had tried to accesstheir admission status but she said those who did only saw a blank screenbecause the school had not yet put the information online.

The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in Durham North Carolinasaid it knew of only one applicant who tried to access the information.

Jim Gray an associate dean at Fuqua, said the school had not yet taken anyofficial action regarding the prospective student but he added “Put it this way:he shouldn’t be buying any Duke sweatshirts or renting any apartments in Durham.”

1.According to the passage, these 119 applicants for Harvard Business School would be rejectedbecause___________.

  A) they were found they were not qualified for the School’s admissionrequirements

  B) they were found to have once illegally intruded into the School’swebsite

  C) they tried to get their application information through illegalways

  D) they were found to have stolen the School’s admission informationfrom a website

2.According to Kim Clark, a Harvard BusinessSchool student should be_____.

  A) among the best students with honors

  B) a strict business leader who is frank, honest and well principled

  C) well aware of principles, and with good judgment and highlymoral

  3. What measure was the Schooladopted to clear the ill effect immediately after the hacking incidenthappened?

  A) It immediately proclaimed that the applicants were rejected.

  B) It immediately mended the security flaw of its website.

  C) It accused of these applicants violated the school’s admissionregulations.

  4. As for those applicants hackinginto the Tuck School of Business website, the School said that_______。

  A) it would not accept these hacker students because of their hackingpractice

  B) it would make an inquiry to see what was wrong with its website

  C) it hadn’t been affected regarding their admission practices

  D) it would completely go through the incident first

  5. By saying“Put it this way:he shouldn’t be buying any Duke sweatshirtsor renting any apartment in Durham”(Lines 2-3,Para.14),Jim Fraymost probably means that_______.

  A) this applicant concerned would not pay fees for clothes

  B) this applicant concerned would pay rents for themselves

  C) this applicant concerned would not be admitted

  D) this applicant concerned would be charged free

題目中的 completely go through 實(shí)際上就是文章倒數(shù)第四段中 carryout a full investigation 的同義轉(zhuǎn)述,是該學(xué)院即將采取的措施。

The Eskimos have developed a capacityto live peacefully with one another.

They have not had a strict system oflandownership, one of the universal causes of conflict. They have evolved a system of fotxt-sharing amongfamilies that makes the preservation of life possible. The absolute necessityof creating this safeguard against starvation has strengthened bonds betweenneighbors. Almost every traveler hasnoted the Eskimos' friendliness and good humor toward strangers and amongthemselves. In a country whereagriculture is impossible they have been forced to spend their energies infood-gathering rather than warfare. If one family disagreed with another, theusual solution was for that family to pick up its few possessions and goelsewhere. In the vast unused land, moving presented almost no problem.

The practice of infanticide, andsuicide among the old people, seems to have been a factor of survival in timesof food scarcity. The size of the familywas controlled to some extent by the ability of the father as a hunter and bythe abundance of game (獵物) in the area.

Marriage was a very serious andlifelong bond among Eskimos; in order to choose a permanent and compatible matea number of trial marriages were permined, each lasting perhaps half a year.During the trial period a couple usually lived with the girl's parents and theyoung man hunted exclusively for his future father-in-law. If a child was bomas a result of an unsuccessful trial marriage it was adopted by relatives orfriends. Children are often given out for adoption in the Eskimos society andare eagerly adopted by other families, for the Eskimos’ camp and nomad (游牧民族的) group represent a kind of extendedfamily. Polygamy (一夫多妻制) was occasionally practiced bythe most successful hunters, but usually to protect a widow or a girl who hadlost her father.

  1. The Eskimos live peacefully with oneanother because of ______.

  A. their system of landownership B. their system of food-sharing

  C. the development of agriculture D. their love for moving

  A. critical B. horrified

  C. understanding D. favorable

  3. Which of the following is true of anEskimo family?

  A. The more successful a hunter was,the bigger his family would be.

  B. The more successful a hunter was,the more wives he would marry.

  C. The more successful a hunter was,the more probable he would marry a widow.

  D. The more successful a hunter was,the more probable his wife was a fatherless girl.

  4. It can be inferred about the Eskimomarriage that _______.

  A. trial marriage was permitted onlyonce in one’s lifetime

  B. young couples lived by themselvesduring the trial period

  C. children out of trial marriage wouldbe given to others

  A. the Eskimo fathers play the role ofbreadwinner

  B. the Eskimo children are notcherished by their parents

  C. when the Eskimos grow old, theyusually kill themselves

  D. the Eskimos will retaintheir way of life

選項(xiàng)A與該段第l句中的a number oftrial marriages were permitted不符;選項(xiàng)B與該段第2句不符;選項(xiàng)C與第3句不符,文中指出如果試婚失敗(an unsuccessful trial marriage),試婚期間所生的小孩會由別人收養(yǎng),并不如選項(xiàng)C中所述所有試婚期間所生的小孩都會送由別人收養(yǎng)。
