Listening for general comprehension
Most of us long for relationships in which we are loved and accepted just the way we are. However, we can have such relationships with some others, but only when we first have them with ourselves—and, strangely, this is often the hardest relationship of all.
Do you love yourself? There’s only one way to find out—by taking a close look at what you think, say, and do. If you’re really loving yourself, you can use this insight to do some positive inner work.
Here are three ways for gaining greater personal insight for deeper love. Firstly, listen closely to your thoughts. Your thoughts will determine your actions. A journal or a notebook can help record various insights you gain as you go about your life. It will help you know what’s in your heart. Secondly, be honest with yourself. Actions speak louder than words, and they always tell the truth. By being honest with yourself, you will act according to truth instead of just what you tell yourself. Thirdly, take quiet time to listen to your inner voice. Sometimes you may want to use your quiet time to think deeply. The key is to shut out all of the noise around you by focusing deep within yourself. It’s hard to find quiet time during a particularly busy day, but it’s so important. Quiet time can really make a difference in your life.
Despite what your mind may be telling you, you can have love with no limits. The key is to unconditionally love yourself first.

Listening for general comprehension
Most of us participate in some activities and organizations and give our time and money to help others. We are showing our brotherly love for others, but it is not quite the same as giving the love in person. Ways that we can share brotherly love in person are varied. When I see young people holding the door for an elderly person, or someone helping a lady put her groceries in the car, or even a scout who helps a woman cross the street, I realize that they are taking their time to share brotherly love personally. Many people collect food and clothing for the poor. Other people participate in some programs where Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are provided for those in need, as well as Christmas presents for the less fortunate.
This famous quotation “Though we can give without loving, it is almost impossible to love without giving.” was said by a French philosopher. When we do good deeds that help our fellow man, we are showing love. We are often told to “love our neighbors”. We should neither feel indifferent to those who need help nor let our egos stand in the way of helping them. There are many occasions when we can sympathize with those less fortunate and we are capable of giving them our generosity. Philadelphia is known as the city of brotherly love but every town that has people who care and help those less fortunate is also “cities of brotherly love”.

5. Which city is known as the city of brotherly love?

A father’s love—or the lack of it—contributes as much to the development of a child’s personality and behavior as the love of a mother, according to researchers. In some respects, they add, a father’s love is even more influential.
Probably the most important and most surprising finding of all is that the importance of mothers’ love seems to drop out altogether in some of the analyses.
The researchers reviewed almost 100U.S.and European studies investigating the effects of parenting on the psychology and behavior of children as they grew older. The earliest study was conducted in 1949, and the most recent was completed in 2001.
They report that the degree of acceptance or rejection a child receives—and perceives—from his or her father appears to affect his or her development as deeply as the presence or absence of a mother’s love.
They note that the withholding of love by either the mother or the father is equally connected to a child’s lack of self-esteem, emotional instability, withdrawal, depression and anxiety. And the risk of developing problems with aggression, drug and alcohol abuse was equally related to a child’s rejection or acceptance by either parent.
The investigators also found that having the love and nurturing of either parent has an equally positive effect on a child’s happiness, well-being and social and academic success from early childhood through young adulthood.

M: When I say I live inSweden, people always want to know about the seasons.
W: The seasons?
M: Yeah, you know how cold it is in winter? What is it like when the days are so short?
W: So what is it like?
M: Well, it is cold, very cold in winter. Sometimes it is cold as 26 degrees below centigrade. And of course when you go out, you’ll wrap up warm. But inside in the houses it’s always very warm, much warmer than at home. Swedish people always complain that when they visitEngland, the houses are cold even in the good winter.
W: And what about the darkness?
M: Well, yeah, around Christmas time there’s only one hour of daylight, so you really looks forward to the spring. It is sometimes a bit depressing. But you see the summers are amazing, from May to July in the North of Sweden the sun never sets. It’s still light in the midnight. You can walk in the mountains and read a newspaper.
W: Oh, yeah, the land of the midnight sun.
M: Yeah, that’s right, but it’s wonderful. You won’t stay up all night. And the Swedes make most of it. Often they started work earlier in summer and then leave at about 2 or 3 in the afternoon, so that they can really enjoy the long summer evenings. They’d like to work hard, but play hard, too. I think Londoners work longer hours, but I’m not sure this is a good thing.
Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
19. What do we learn about the man from the conversation?
20. What do Swedish people complain about when they visitEnglandin winter?
21. How does the man describe the short hour of daylight around Christmas inSweden?
22. What does the man say about the Swedish people?

In parks and streets across London, people turned out in the hundreds of thousands to (1) celebrate the royal wedding.
Here in Clapham Common — just a few miles from Westminster Abbey — the service played (2) on a big screen to 2,000 flag-waving fans.
For a country normally reserved about overt shows of patriotism, Britain became a sea of Union Jack flags.
As Prince William and Catherine Middleton (3) read their vows, cheers rippled across the crowd. (Partygoers we spoke to had nothing but praise for the newly-wed couple.)
“Lovely! She looked brilliant!”
“She looked absolutely stunning. Not over the top at all.”
“It’s been really, really good. And everyone here too, sitting silently and listening to the vows. It (4) feels very British.”
“I didn’t think I’d feel so moved by it. Neither of us did. But it was actually quite emotional.”
From fish and chips served (5) from a traditional London bus, to strawberries and cream, every facet of British culture seemed to be on show.
Thousands of street parties have taken place across Britain. Battersea in London is one of (6) the most diverse communities in the capital. Here neighbors and businesses came together to celebrate — and in some cases, make a bit of money.
Party organizer Valeria Ruzzon says people have turned out whether they’re interested in the wedding or not. “This is not about having an opinion about the monarchy; this is about having a party on a day that we should all enjoy because we live in this country. So it’s ready about (7) embracing the culture we live in. I’m Italian, I’ve been here for 20 years but I couldn’t beat it, so I decided to join it!”
This was also a chance to (8) show off some fancy outfits — from the patriotic to the hopeful.
VOA found this girl wandering around in a wedding dress looking for her own Prince William.
“And I am actually called Kate,” she said. “No, I really am called Kate! It’s the only time in my life that I’ve had to argue, ‘No, I really am called Kate!’”
Many of the street celebrations were local, low-key affairs, a chance for neighbors to (9) get together and chat in a city that’s often accused of lacking community spirit.
For the younger crowd, the party went on into the night. Many said they planned to keep going all weekend. These young women from the Netherlands have another idea.
“We’re going to find Harry, that’s our plan actually,” (said one)
“Harry, (10) if you’re available, we’re single!” (exclaimed another)
It seems many people are already making plans for the next royal wedding.

August Rush: Listen. Can you hear it? The music. I can hear it (1) everywhere. In the wind, in the air, in the (2) light. It’s all around us. All you have to do is open yourself up. All you have to do is listen.
Mannix: Hello, Porky. Where’s your little (3) friend?
August Rush: I don’t know, Mr. Mannix.
Mannix: Go find him or your big butt’s mine.
August Rush: Where I’ve grown up... (Evan!)
August Rush: They tried to stop me from (4) hearing the music. But when I’m alone, it builds up from (5) inside me. And I think if I could learn how to play it, they might hear me. They would know I was theirs, and find me. (Knock, knock. Wake up. Who’s there? Who’s there? Freak. Freak. Said, knock, knock, freak.)
August Rush: Who’s there? (Your (6) long-lost mommy and daddy. Can you hear them?)
August Rush: Yes. (No, you can’t.)
August Rush: I can. (You don’t have no family. You can’t hear anything. Say it. Say it. Say it. Say it. Say it. Say it…)
August Rush: Yes, I can. (He doesn’t hear anything. Yeah. What is he? He’s a freak. (7) Sweet dreams, freaks. Sleep tight. Good night. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.)
August Rush: Sometimes the world tries to knock it out of you. But I believe in music, the way that some people believe in (8) fairy tales. I like to (9) imagine that what I hear came from my mother and father. Maybe the notes I hear are the same ones they heard the (10) night they met. Maybe that’s how they found each other. Maybe that’s how they’ll find me.
