Describe a dinner you enjoyed with your friends.
You should say:
when and where you had the dinner
what you had
who you went with
and explain why you enjoyed the dinner.
Just a couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a new restaurant that neither of us been to. I think it is quite famous among Chinese people as it is a specialist Buddhist vegetarian restaurant.
As another good friend of ours was celebrating being offered and accepting an excellent new job, we made a big party of the meal. The three of us invited another seven close friends, so there were ten of us in total. We all studied at school together, but we rarely get together for such a big reunion unless it is a special occasion.
We each ordered one or two dishes that interested us, so we had over fifteen dishes in total, plus noodles and rice, on the table. It would be impossible to remember everything we ordered! My absolute favourite dish was the tofu – it was soft as jelly, sweet and sour in perfect measure. I was not the only person to adore this dish, so we ended up ordering a second dish of the same tofu.
What I enjoyed most about our big meal was not the food – though that was excellent – but the company. The ten of us had a very lively, non-stop conversation over the large round table, and I felt like I was back in my schooldays again, surrounded by good friends.
Describe a time when you saw an interesting animal.
You should say:
what animal it was
when and where you saw it
and explain what you felt about this animal.
It may sound uninteresting to you, but I always remember seeing my neighbour's dog. It wasn’t just one time, but every day; and the dog does not look very remarkable. It looks bored. It looks bored to be a dog and bored to see me. But I am not bored to see this dog.
This dog and I cross paths on my way to and from school every day. My guess is the dog has his regular walks with his human at the same times that school brings me back and forth. Tired and under orders from my mum that I have to do my best at school, I get pushed off the pavement by this dog twice a day.
The dog's face never changes, except that he glances away slightly when I start to make eye contact. His human is an old man who trails behind and has nothing to do with the interaction. So it is just the dog and I, going head to head. The dog always wins.
The dog looks away and does not break stride. The pavement is his pavement and he shows me. I step down off the curb, gazing at the dog, once again defeated.
I could just walk in the road from the time I get off the bus. There is no functional reason to have a standoff with a dog twice daily. But, I admire the dog. He may be bored, but he is living his life, with his human, on his piece of the local pavement. One day, I will be as proud as the dog, proud of my life.
Describe a time when you had to work hard to achieve a goal.
You should say:
what the goal was
when this happened
what you did to achieve this goal
and explain why the goal was important to you.
During my final year of high school, I decided not to go to university right away but instead would spend a year volunteering in a children’s home for orphaned girls in Southern Africa. If I could pull it off, I knew it would make my university application stronger and it would vastly broaden my horizons. I also knew that if I failed, it could be a serious disappointment and a major blow to my confidence.
Surprisingly, I breezed through the selection process. I was given a place on a 12-month overseas programme. But a major challenge lay ahead before I could even leave my country. I had to raise thousands of pounds. I couldn’t ask my family, relatives or friends for sums of money. I didn’t even have a job or any savings to fall back on. I had to raise the money by holding charity events and asking strangers for donations.
I featured in my local newspaper twice within 6 months, advertising events and competitions that people could take part in. I organized raffles and games that people paid to enter hoping to win prizes or money. Within 9 months of being accepted onto the programme, I had raised the money necessary to go overseas. I was extremely proud of myself.
The year I spent abroad changed my life, as I knew it would. It opened a huge number of doors to me that would otherwise be closed. I am still riding off the back of that opportunity, and I know it is all down to my hard work fundraising that it happened at all.
Describe a time when you were looking at the sky.
You should say:
when and where you looked at the sky
who you looked at sky with
how you felt when looking at it
and explain why you looked at the sky.
I don’t often take much notice of the sky, unless it’s a particularly lovely day and the weather is beautiful, with a clear blue sky. I live in a big city, so during the day the sky is usually grey due to pollution caused by cars and factories, and at the night it is glowing because of light pollution, so you can see the moon but hardly any stars.
The one time of the year I make a special effort to look up at the sky is Mid-Autumn Festival. Mid-Autumn Festival occurs during the 15th of August in the Chinese lunar calendar, when there is a bright full moon. I can’t always make it back to my hometown, but last year I was lucky enough to have time.
My family live in the country, so the night sky is very clear and you can see a spectacular array of stars and sometimes even the Milky Way. After eating a big meal, I stood outside with my mother, father and sister and looked at the moon while we all ate moon cakes. As I looked up, I thought about my family and the sacrifices they have made to give me a good education and a good start in life, as well as how magnificent the stars looked.
Whenever the festival comes, people tend to look up at the full silver moon and drink wine as a way to celebrate their happy life and to extend their best wishes to their relatives and friends far from home.
