How often do you hang out with your friends?

I'm pretty busy in general, but I always try to set aside some time to hang out with friends. I guess I see them once a week, usually at weekends. It's important to keep a good work life balance and being with my friends relaxes me.

Where do you often hang out? Why?

If I'm with my friends then it's a pretty safe bet that I'll be in a bar. It's convenient for everyone to get to from different parts of the city and there's nothing like sharing a few beers and putting the world to rights with your mates.

Do you want to hang out with a group of people or with a few friends?

If I had the choice, I'd rather hang out with a few close friends. It's nice when you are all on the same wavelength, so you feel comfortable with each other and there are no awkward silences. It’s also less likely that there will be someone there who I don’t really like that much.

What do you usually do when you hang out with your friends?

A lot of the times when I meet my friends we'll have a party at my house. Its good to have a pot luck, where each person will bring food or drink and we'll just put it all together and sit around chatting or playing games. We could start in the morning, but before we know it it'll be the evening. Like they say, "Time flies when you're having fun".

Would you like to hang out with strangers?

I’m quite a shy and reserved person, so I don’t hang out with strangers very often. I can get very stressed out in situations where I don’t know anyone as I don’t know what to say. My worst nightmare is to be at a party and only know one or two people.

  Accommodation

1.Can you describe the place where you live?

Well, I live in a high-rise building where the facilities are good in urban area. There are air-conditioning and voice-controlled doors in the building. However, people who live here rarely communicate with their neighbours and they’re quite indifferent to each other.

2.Are the transport facilities to your home very good?

Yes, it’s quite convenient. There’s a subway station not far from where I live. Normally, I take it to go and off work. Plus, actually, a bus station is just near the community, but unfortunately, it’s very crowded during rush hour.

3.Can you describe the room you live in?

Well, my apartment is well decorated. Actually, I have a large coffee table in front of the sofa, so I can put coffee, magazines and different types of snacks on it. And also, the wall of my room is in light green which makes me feel like to be surrounded by the natural world.

4.What can you see when you look out the window of your room?

Sadly, there’s no magnificent scenery out of my window because, you know, I live in an apartment in the city centre. However, I can see a small garden over my window, there’re some elderly people playing Tai Chi and doing exercises in the morning.

5.In the future, what type of place would you like to live in?

Well, I am thinking of, may be, I’d choose the house near water, not only because I love different types of seafood but also because I enjoy watching the beautiful sunset over the water. You know what, the most impressive thing living near the sea is that, I can invite my friends and family to come here during weekends to have a party or barbecue near the beach.

  1.Where do you study?

I’m studying at Beijing University. My university has a good reputation in China and it’s quite hard to get in. So, I’ve buckled down to my studies and managed to get through all the exams a year before. Well, fortunately, I finally got in my ideal university with my favourite major.

  2.What subject are you studying?

Well, I’m doing business management. I’ve taken some courses like marketing, organizational management, advertising and something like that. Well, to be honest, it wasn't my first choice. I wanted to study chemistry at first. But in some ways, I guess, business management has a promising career opportunity.

3.What do you do with your classmates after classes?

Apparently, I love socializing with my fellows, we usually go to different kinds of places to unwind ourselves from the heavy workload. However, if we are going to have a quiz on the next day, we will probably go to a coffee shop or library to pull out all the stops for the test.

4.What would you like to do after graduation?

Well, if I graduated from high school, I’d probably take a year off and travel to other countries, maybe Nepal, Japan or somewhere else. I’m obsessed with the traditions, cultures and even the languages of different countries.

5.Do you think your subject will be useful in the future?

Well, I really doubt that. You know, most of the theories or definitions that I learned in my university are just a kind of theoretical stuff. Well, lots of the examples in the textbook are actually designed or designated for ideal or typical circumstances. I think it’s out-dated and not applicable to the real world situations.

  Can you swim?

Well, no, actually I had an unhappy experience swimming when I was a child. Actually, I nearly drowned when I had my first swimming lesson. So I’m terribly afraid of water, I can’t tackle the psychological problems and I haven’t made up my mind whether to learn again.

  Do you like swimming?

No, I hate swimming. The water in the swimming pool is dirty, full of bacteria. Actually, I don’t know if this is my problem, well, I need to take a shower every time I go swimming immediately if I don’t want any red spots on my body. Plus, there’s only an outdoor pool in my neighbourhood and the prolonged exposure to the sun really hurts my skin and can cause sunburn.

Where do (or can) people go swimming in your hometown (or, near you home)?

Well, there are many beaches in Hong Kong, especially in Hong Kong Island. I see many people bring their children to the beach to go swimming, build sandcastles or something like that. Well, although it’s filled with people all the time, especially Sundays,it still has great surroundings and an enjoyable atmosphere.

Why do many people like swimming?

Frankly, the reason is quite obvious. Well, there are benefits for peoples’health, you know like, burning calories and stimulating circulation. Women perceive swimming as a good way to keep their figure and lose weight. One more thing, it’s probably the only sport that won’t make you feel sweaty.

Do you think it’s important to know how to swim?

Um…I don’t think it’s vital for people tolearn how to swim. To be honest, I don’t know how to swim but I can still have fun by taking part in some water sports, like playing water balls or other water based activities. In my view, I think swimming is regarded as a leisure activity, so it doesn’t make sense for it to become a must.

  What is your favourite snack?

My favourite snack would have to be baozi, I think in English you would call them steamed buns or dumplings. They're delicious and best of all they're cheap! They are served all over the place so you can pick a bag up on-the-go and you can get all sorts of different fillings. My personal favourite is pork with white cabbage.

What kind of snack is popular in your country?

China has a wide range of snacks, some savoury and some sweet. I think they are very specific to our country and sometimes to the local region you are in. In Beijing the pastries from Daoxiangcun are very popular. They are eaten by locals, but are also bought as souvenirs by visitors.

When do you usually have snacks?

I tend to eat 3 main meals a day, but I also like to graze on snacks in between meals. I've gotten into the habit of having elevenses, which I picked up from a foreigner I used to work with. It usually involves a cup of tea or coffee, with a cake or some biscuits at around eleven AM.

What are the benefits of having a snack?

I find that snacks perform different roles depending on when I have them. A mid-morning snack is an excuse for a little break and can be a bit of a pick me up if I'm feeling sleepy. A snack in the afternoon keeps my hunger at bay and helps tide me over till dinner.

Who prefer snacks, men or women/ the young or the old?

I think women wouldn't like to admit it, but they probably snack more than men. It isn't necessarily always snacks that are bad for you, I think they also eat more fruit between meals. As for the young or old, I think young people must snack more, partly because there are more snacks aimed at young people, but also because I think young people eat more than old people in general.

1.Do you like to eat fruit(s) and vegetables?

Yes, sure, I love fruits, like oranges, watermelon and so on, because they’re sweet and refreshing and help me maintain my healthy diet. But I just go for the fresh ones. When they are cooked or preserved, such as canned fruit, they change at the chemical level and this kills a lot of the enzymes, which aid in digestion and the absorption of the nutrients.

  2.What’s your favourite fruit?

Well, I love oranges most because having one after dinner can help me break down my food better. They can also help me lose more weight. On the other hand, if possible, I’ll avoid lemons because I think they are a little bit too sharp for me.

3.Do you think people should eat more fruits and vegetables?

Definitely. You know, vegetables and fruits are important protective foods that are valued in maintaining alkaline reserves in the body and preventing disease. So people should eat more fruits and vegetables, which can be successfully utilized to build up and repair the body.

4.What are the benefits for children from eating fruits and vegetables?

Well, it’s important for children to develop good eating habits at an early age, as vegetables contain fiber, lots of vitamins and minerals, which may have additional health benefits. Obviously, kids usually have a sweet tooth and like to eat something that tastes good.

5.How much fruit and vegetables do you think a person needs to stay healthy?

Well, it depends on different types of people, like for example; adults should have 3 servings of fruit and 4 servings of vegetables on a daily basis, whereas children just need a cup of fruit or vegetables which are rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, to keep their gums healthy.
