職場英語:Medical assistant salary data
In this worrying time of job losses and rising unemployment, healthcare is one sector that is not in decline. In fact, with an ageing population, there is actually a growing need for healthcare professionals, and a job that would suit the average person coming out of high school is that of medical assistant.
Medical assistants perform general administrative tasks in a medical and healthcare environment, but there is of course a particular emphasis on the medical terminology that appears on various records and forms. Such terms have to be entered carefully and accurately. Employers may also place a premium on knowledge of the electronic data systems in use in many hospitals, surgeries and other healthcare facilities, so this tends to favor more experienced candidates.
Apart from the record-keeping and data-entering side of the job, there is also an important customer care aspect, since patients will usually see a medical assistant before meeting any doctor or nurse. In view of this, and the specialist nature of some of the work, there can be considerable variation in the salaries commanded by medical assistants.
The typical medical assistant salary ranges from just over $20,000 to as high as $50,000 in some cases. The highest paid personnel will have completed an accredited college program relevant to the field. It is still possible to gain employment as a medical assistant without a college degree, but college graduates will almost certainly enjoy better salaries. A further point to note is that medical assistants are usually required to have CPR certification, although the necessary training for this will quite often be offered by employers to workers on the job.
It should be noted that legislation concerning the qualifications required by medical assistants differs somewhat across US states. This will affect job applicants, both from the point of view of the level of education they will need to get this kind of work in different parts of the country, as well as the salaries they are likely to be offered.
In addition to any required college diploma or degree, experience is the number one factor affecting a medical assistant salary. This is the kind of job where common sense, a level head, and a broad range of skills are together invaluable. Those enjoying the highest salaries will almost certainly be those who have been doing the job for 20 years or more. Such people will have built up their skills over the years, having gradually been assigned a wider and wider range of duties.
