接offer之前考慮著6個問題-英語學習!!
You've spent the last few months answering help wanted ads, visiting recruiters, and networking. You've sent out your resumes and gone on a bunch of interviews. And now the moment you've been waiting for is here. It's your turn now. You have some job offers to consider. During those long days pounding the pavement, you didn't think making a decision would be this difficult. But this is serious business. The job you take now may be yours for a long time to come. 當你已經(jīng)從忙碌地查閱招聘廣告、觀察招募現(xiàn)場和搜尋網(wǎng)絡的苦海里解脫出來,當你已經(jīng)發(fā)送過多不勝數(shù)的簡歷并參與了各種各樣的面試,那么接下來該做的事情就是等待。好了,現(xiàn)在有幾份工作可以讓你選擇了,但是你從來沒有想過,決定選擇哪一份工作會如此的困難。但這是一件嚴肅的事情,因為你選擇的工作有可能就是你人生的職業(yè)。
What's the most important thing to consider? Is it salary, health benefits, or vacation time? Or could it be the corporate culture or the length or your commute? What about your boss and co-workers -- will working with them be pleasant? As you can see there are a number of factors to take into account and only some are negotiable. You can try to get a higher salary or more vacation time. However, health benefits are often standard packages. The corporate culture isn't going to change for you, and your boss and co-workers aren't going anywhere. 選擇工作最重要的因素是什么?是薪酬,保健福利,還是假期?是企業(yè)文化,還是工作時間?還是上司和同事——跟他們工作你能感覺到快樂嗎?正如這里所提到的,有這么多因素你需要考慮,而且其中僅僅只有某些是可以商量的。例如申請更高的薪水或更長的假期。但是,保健福利卻不一定,它通常有特定的標準。另外,企業(yè)文化也是不以你的意志為轉(zhuǎn)移的,你還得意識到在工作中你必須要和上司和同事打交道。
Evaluating the Offer 請仔細考慮這些因素
Salary 薪酬
Even if money isn't what gives you the most job satisfaction, no one can argue its importance. You need a certain amount of money to pay the bills, for example. Most of us also want to make sure we are being paid what we're worth and what is the going rate for jobs similar to ours. It's important to find out what others are making for related work in the same industry, and in the same geographic region. You can start gathering this information by looking at salary surveys and other occupational information. And don't forget, if other aspects of the job appeal to you, you can try to negotiate the offer. 盡管獲得薪水對于你來說不一定是工作中最大的成就感,但它的作用是毋庸置疑的。比如你必須花錢支付生活中的費用。很多人都想獲得符合自己預期標準甚至是與工作效率同步提高的薪水,此時你得了解其他同行或同區(qū)域相關職業(yè)的工資標準。你可以通過工資水平調(diào)查和其他就業(yè)數(shù)據(jù)獲取相關信息。并且請別忘了,如果你發(fā)現(xiàn)這份工作的其他方面讓你有所保留,你也可以嘗試與該公司商量。
Office Environment 工作環(huán)境
Every office has a different feel to it. Some feel kind of "dark pin-striped suit" while others feel a little more relaxed. Years ago I interviewed for an internship in a public relations firm. From the second I set foot in the office I knew I wanted to work there. There was a big bubble gum machine in the corner and colorful pictures hung on the walls. A few years later I interviewed for a job at a large investment bank. The office was the complete opposite of the one I just described. I was interviewed in a formally decorated conference room and given a tour of the department I'd be working in. It was brightly lit, yet furnished in dull colors. I was offered and accepted both positions and loved both jobs. As you can see, you can be happy in two totally different environments. You just need to know which environment you'd be unhappy in. 每一間辦公室都有其獨特的氛圍。有的會讓人覺得有種"大別針,條紋套裝"的緊迫感,但也有的會讓人覺得輕松。筆者多年前參與一間公關公司的實習生面試。當我踏進那間公司的那一刻,我就知道,我想在這里工作!在那間辦公室里,角落處有一臺很大的口香糖售賣機,墻壁上掛著許多色彩繽紛的圖片。幾年后,我又參與了一間大型投資銀行的面試,那兒的情況跟我所描述的公關公司環(huán)境大相徑庭。我在一個裝潢得很正式的會議室里面試,面試后還參觀了我即將工作所在的部門。那是一間非常明亮、配著暗色系家具的辦公室。但是這兩份工作我都欣然接受了。由此可見,你完全可以在兩個不同的環(huán)境下工作。你只需清楚自己不喜歡的工作環(huán)境就足夠了。
Corporate Culture 企業(yè)文化
Defined by Merriam-Webster as "the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes a company or corporation," corporate culture should be an important factor in your decision whether to accept a job offer. If you value your time away from the office, a company with a corporate culture that encourages late hours may not be for you. Is the potential employer's philosophy "win at all costs?" Is your philosophy "always play clean?" This company isn't for you. Are you an ardent proponent for animal rights? Through your research you learn that one of the company's subsidiaries does animal testing. Although this won't affect the day-to-day activities of your job, it may not be a situation in which you'll feel comfortable. 企業(yè)文化的定義,是根據(jù)Merriam Webster提出關于"一系列突出公司或企業(yè)特點的共同理念,價值觀,目標和業(yè)務"的概念所建立的。在你決定是否接受工作條件的時候,企業(yè)文化是需要考慮到的很重要因素。如果你很珍惜自己的時間想早早下班,那么提倡加班的公司則不能選。如果雇主是為了獲取勝利不惜一切代價的人,你只想堅持自己光明正直的原則,那么這間公司也不適合你。如果你是一名熱衷于動物保護事業(yè)的愛好者,而它的子公司正在利用動物來進行產(chǎn)品測試,也許這對于你的日常工作沒多大影響,但是你卻會因此而無法釋懷。
Commute Time 通勤時間
When you're considering a job offer, take into account the length of your commute. What may have seemed like an okay distance to travel for a job interview may begin to wear thin when you have to make that trip twice a day, five days a week, in rush hour traffic. 當你在衡量工作條件是否滿意的時候,考慮一下通勤時長吧?赡軐τ谀銇碚f,從家里到面試現(xiàn)場的用時是可以接受的,但是當你在上班高峰期,以一周五天,一天兩次的頻率往返于公司和家里,這絕對會讓你瘋掉的。
Your Boss/Co-Workers 上司與同事
I was once being interviewed by the director of an organization and the head of the department I'd be working in. In the middle of the interview the director yelled at the department head. When I was offered the job, I didn't even ask how much, I just said "no thank you." While I wouldn't have daily contact with the director, I knew I would have enough contact with him to make my life miserable. 筆者曾經(jīng)被某間公司經(jīng)理和部門主管面試過,在面試過程中,經(jīng)理忽然向主管大聲吼叫。后來我通過了面試,得到了工作,但是我不敢過問太多,我只簡單地說了聲"謝謝"。相反,我跟經(jīng)理沒有太多日常的交流,因為我知道如果我太八卦,我將會掉進自己所挖的洞里面。
The same could be said of co-workers who are difficult to get along with. They may not influence your job, but they will influence the quality of the time you spend at work. Generally an interview will involve a tour of the office. Try to notice if people seem friendly and happy. This may be difficult to ascertain, but it's worth a shot. This is where networking comes in handy. Start calling people on your list of contacts to see if anyone knows something about the company. 同樣的情況也會發(fā)生在同事之間。同事們也許不會影響你的工作,但會影響你工作的質(zhì)量。一般來說,正式的面試都會帶領大家參觀公司的環(huán)境。此時你可以觀察周圍的同事,看看他們是否友好和快樂。也許這是很難確定的事情,但是值得一試。這時候,人際關系該派上用場了。你可以給通訊錄上的朋友打電話,詢問他們是否知道那間公司的一些事情。
Each of these factors taken alone may not make or break your decision to accept or decline a job offer. When you put them all together, though, you will have the information you need to make an educated choice. And then it will be time to let the potential employer in on your decision. 僅僅考慮這些因素的某一個也許不會改變你的決定。但是當你把它們綜合起來思考的話,你就能得到所需的信息了。然后就該考慮未來的老板了。
Accepting or Declining the Offer接受/拒絕條件
Whether you choose to accept or reject a job offer, you must inform the employer who made that offer. This should be done formally, in writing, and if you wish by telephone as well. If your answer is "yes" it's obvious why you'll want to make a good impression with your future employer. But, why is it important to be polite to someone you don't plan to work for? Well, you don't know where your future will take you. You may at some point wind up with that employer as a superior, a colleague, a client, or even your next door neighbor. You certainly don't want to leave a bad impression. 無論你是否接受一份工作,你必須通知給你提出條件的雇主。你必須以書面形式認真地表述清楚,或者你喜歡的話,也可以通過電話來通知他。當然,你的答復是"確定的"肯定能夠給你的未來老板留下好的印象。但是,為什么你得禮貌地拒絕不想接受的工作呢?因為你很有可能最終以其他身份遇見他,他有可能成為你的上司,同事,客戶,甚至是你的鄰居,你可不想因為之前的無禮給他留下壞印象吧?
