Symbols in Invisible Man

Abstract

Invisible Man is the representative work of American black writer Ralf Ellison. It is a novel using many symbols. It describes the process how a young African-American in the 1930s strives for freedom and seeks for his identity in the society dominated by the white. This thesis mainly analyzes the symbolic meaning of the three images: “colors”, “visual sense” and “objects” in Invisible Man, revealing the fact that Afro-Americans are invisible in the white dominated American society. Although Afro-Americans play an important role in the development of the American society, they are also neglected.

摘要

《看不見(jiàn)的人》是美國(guó)黑人作家拉爾夫•埃利森的代表作. 它是1部高度象征性的小說(shuō)，描寫(xiě)了在210世紀(jì)310年代白人主宰的社會(huì)中1個(gè)非裔美國(guó)人如何尋找自我身份和如何尋求自由以及想要被白人主流社會(huì)接受的過(guò)程.本文主要通過(guò)對(duì)作品中使用的3種意象“色彩”、“視覺(jué)”和 “物質(zhì)”的象征意義的分析,探討了作者如何使用象征手法來(lái)揭示非裔美國(guó)人處于白人為主流的社會(huì)中被看不見(jiàn)的事實(shí),指出盡管他們?cè)诎兹藶橹髁鞯纳鐣?huì)中起著舉足輕重的作用,但是仍然受到忽視。
